Hello and thank you for visiting my site! I am passionate about birth and feel so fortunate to have found a career that I truly love. Below is more information about my journey and life.
I received a Bachelor’s of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering from Vanderbilt University with a minor in Computer Science. I spent my early professional life working as a database programmer in the healthcare field.
After the birth of my second child, I realized that I couldn’t stop reading and learning about everything related to birth. I was devouring books as quickly as I could get them. At the same time I had a pregnant friend whose husband was transferred out of state and needed someone to be a backup in case she went into labor and he was not in town. She asked me to be her backup. I was so excited about this role and immediately met with her to determine how best I could help her in labor and what her preferences were. It’s hard to believe, but in Atlanta in 2004 you didn’t hear about doulas and I had no idea that I was acting as her doula. It turned out that my friend’s husband was back in time for her labor. I was so disappointed until I realized that this was actually a profession…something that I could do for other people. I discovered the role of a doula and the rest is history!
March 2015 will mark my 10th year as a doula! Since I became a doula in 2005, I have attended over 200 births. I certified as a Lamaze Childbirth Educator in 2009 and have recently been elected to serve on the board of Lamaze International.
After noticing a need, I created doula focused online store , YourDoulaBag.com in 2009 . I love being able to provide useful tools and fun products to support women choosing this incredible profession. I have since added a service called YourDoulaBiz.com to our product offerings. YourDoulaBiz is a software subscription service for doulas to use to manage their doula businesses.
I am the mother to 2 incredible daughters and 2 awesome sons. The girls were born in the hospital and the boys at home. I am married to my high school sweetheart, Rob Turner who is my biggest supporter and without him none of my work could be possible.
While birth is definitely my passion, there are a few other things that I love. This list includes: very hot showers, good coffee, all types of crafts, music (the Indigo Girls in particular) and traveling with my family.
